The incident occurred around noon at a godown located on Transport Depot Road near Brace Bridge, officials said. According to police, four individuals have been rescued so far from the debris, while 11 injured persons have been shifted to the Trauma Care Centre at SSKM Hospital for treatment.
A senior Kolkata Police official confirmed the incident, stating, “The roof of the warehouse located on Transport Depot Road near Brace Bridge in the Taratala area collapsed around noon. Our officers have reached the spot. Some people were working at the site at the time of the incident. We fear that quite a few people may be trapped under the debris.”
The warehouse, owned by a private entity, was under construction when the collapse took place. Emergency response teams, including personnel from Kolkata Police, the Disaster Management Group, Civil Defence, Fire and Emergency Services, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were immediately deployed to the site. Army personnel were also seen assisting in rescue efforts.
Rescue operations are being carried out using cranes and heavy machinery to lift collapsed iron beams and clear debris as teams continue searching for survivors trapped under the rubble.
The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) confirmed that cranes, gas cutter sets, fire brigade units, and an ambulance with a medical team were dispatched to support the operation. SMPA’s Chief Public Relations Officer Sanjoy Kumar Mukherjee said senior officials, estate division teams, and port security personnel are monitoring the situation on-site.
West Bengal’s state health minister and health secretary also visited the collapse site to oversee rescue and relief measures.
