Naughty Dog's "The Last of Us Part II" is already six years old, but a new experience is coming to the game in the form of a multiplayer mode that will have players join their peers to explore and finish the game together.
"The Last of Us Part II" was released back in 2020 and went on to win Game of the Year at that year's Game Awards, praised heavily for its emotionally driven single-player campaign.
'The Last of Us Part II' Multiplayer Mode Unveiled
A modder shared an almost half-hour gameplay featuring one of the most requested experiences for "The Last of Us Part II" as it shows off a multiplayer mode for the game.
However, it is important to note that it is not Naughty Dog working on this, and this will only be a mod that players need to install themselves in the future in order to play the game online and alongside their friends.
According to the modder called "Speclizer," they have been working on this specific mod project for "TLOU Part II" since January of this year, but they are still in the process of its development at present.
Although not yet available, the presence of long gameplay is a testament that the mod is already near its completion and future availability to gamers.
Naughty Dog is known for canceling its development of the supposed multiplayer spinoff game set within "The Last of Us" world, "Factions," after already garnering significant following and interest from its community.
A former Naughty Dog developer previously revealed that the canceled multiplayer game had reportedly been around 80 percent complete before development was shut down entirely.
What's The Catch?
According to GameRant, Naughty Dog is currently focused on developing "Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet," and an official "Factions" release from the studio seems unlikely at this point. Because of the massive demand for "The Last of Us" multiplayer experiences, Speclizer started the development of this unofficial multiplayer mode, featuring a new experience in this familiar sequel game.
The project is fan-made rather than something coming from Naughty Dog or Sony, and because it is a mod, it will only be playable on the PC version of "The Last of Us Part II." PlayStation players will not be able to access it, since modding tools simply are not available on console the same way they are on PC.
When to Expect 'TLOU Part II' Multiplayer Mod?
The current plan for the mod points to a release sometime in September 2026, though that date is only a planned target and could shift as development continues.
Mods like this are one of the bigger reasons some players gravitate toward PC gaming, since they open the door to experiences that consoles simply do not offer.
That said, the situation also highlights a growing concern among fans, as more upcoming PlayStation exclusives are reportedly skipping PC ports entirely, meaning future games may never get this kind of fan-made treatment.
