The five all-time World Cup top scorers after Messi breaks record

  • Lionel Messi has broken the all-time World Cup top goalscorer record , reaching 18 goals .
  • Argentina’s captain had already achieved his first-ever World Cup hat-trick in a 3-0 win against Algeria, before continuing his fine form in a 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday.
  • The 38-year-old has now surpassed the record previously held by Germany's Miroslav Klose .
  • Kylian Mbappé is also nearing the record , and is currently tied with Klose on 16 goals after scoring twice against Iraq.
  • As such, the overall top scorers in Fifa Men’s World Cup history are now as follows: Lionel Messi (18), Kylian Mbappé (16), Miroslav Klose (16), Brazil’s Ronaldo (15) and Gerd Müller (14).
