One Bed Bath & Beyond zombie coupon is now worth $100,000, company reveals

Bed Bath & Beyond’s 20 percent-off coupons are back from the dead in a new promotion promising discounts and prizes.

The home goods store, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023 but has recently made a comeback under new ownership, announced Monday it is honoring old 20 percent-off coupons redeemed at one of more than 200 Kirkland’s, The Container Store and Bed Bath and Beyond locations.

"For decades, our customers treated these coupons like treasure," company president Amy Sullivan said in a press release. "They tucked them into purses, filing cabinets, cookbooks and memory boxes because they believed they would be valuable someday. We think they were right.”

Along with getting 20 percent off their purchase, the promo, titled “Legendary Coupon Hunt,” comes with a twist - the person who brings in the oldest coupon will win a $100,000 home makeover.

The coupon hunt started Tuesday and will conclude July 21.

Customers can use the coupons at any Bed Bath & Beyond store and the company’s two other brands - The Container Store and Kirkland’s. Each coupon redemption enters shoppers into a drawing for one hundred $500 gift cards and fifty $100 gift cards.

Bed Bath & Beyond was founded in 1971 and grew to more than 1,500 stores in the U.S. by 2018, according to Business Insider. It ranked No. 40 among the National Retail Federation’s top 100 retailers in 2020.

The store’s popularity grew into cult status over time - award-winning comedy Broad City devoted an entire episode to one of its main characters’ obsession with the store.

By 2023, the company’s retail footprint shrunk to 360 Bed Bath & Beyond stores, according to CNN.

It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2023, giving itself the chance to reorganize its debt. It closed all of its stores by August 1 that year, according to Business Insider - its online store, however, stayed open.

Online retailer Overstock.com bought rights to the Bed Bath & Beyond Brand in June 2023, then relaunched the home goods brand’s website two months later.

Celebrity business owner Marcus Lemonis became the company’s CEO in January 2026, promising cost-cutting and acquisitions that would help boost the companies sales.

On Monday, the company announced it plans to open 22 co-branded Bed Bath & Beyond/The Container Store retail locations in cities such as Austin, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston and Nashville.

The company’s 20 percent-off promotion comes at an opportune time for shoppers, many of whom have turned to discount stores and other cost-saving measures to deal with rising inflation and gas prices.
