A rare red weather warning for London has been extended as a record-breaking June heatwave intensifies.
The Met Office alert, which began at 9am on Wednesday and will now run until 11 pm on Friday, warns of a risk to life from the exceptionally hot weather.
Temperatures in the capital reached 35.1C at 3pm, and were forecast to rise to 37C later on Wednesday after reaching a high of 33.9C in Kew Gardens on Tuesday.
The 50-year-old record UK high for June - 35.6C - was broken with 35.7C first recorded in Charlwood in Surrey, with 36C then recorded in Wisley in the same county.
Conditions could get even hotter later in the week.
Scores of schools in London are closing while many shops are doing the same as hundreds of thousands of workers stay at home.

Khan feels heat over Tube air con 'failure'
15:12 , Tom Place
Sir Sadiq Khan is coming under pressure to speed up the rollout of air conditioning on the Tube as London frazzles in its second heatwave of the year.
As temperatures soared towards 40C on Wednesday, the Mayor of London has been urged to sort out delays in new rolling stock with air con for the Piccadilly line.
Opposition politicians also stressed that this must be a step towards air conditioning on the whole of the Underground network as the capital faces hotter weather due to climate change.
The first of 94 new Piccadilly trains had originally been expected to enter service late last year and to bring in air con for the first time on a deep Tube line.
But this was first put back into the second half of this year and is now expected to happen between December and June next year.

Khan asks for public to 'bear with us' during heatwave
15:04 , Tom Place
Sir Sadiq Khan has said that London and the UK as a whole have not adapted to deal with climate change, and urged the public to “bear with us” as they face public transport delays during the heatwave.
The Mayor of London was speaking during a visit to The Aldgate School in London to announce the results of an air quality report.
He said: “What used to be a once in a generation occurrence, events of biblical proportions, now takes place every year, whether it’s heatwaves, whether it’s flash flooding, whether it’s lightning, whether it’s thunder – we as a city, we as a country, haven’t adapted to be resilient to the consequences of man-made climate change.
“People across the country can expect to see delays in public transport today, tomorrow and the rest of this week that’s a consequence of the extreme heat.
“People across the country I am afraid will have to bear with us – our public transport system is not made for temperatures approaching 40C.
“40% of Tubes are now air conditioned with more going forward. I will be publishing very soon a plan of what more we need to do to deal with heat.”
Met Office warns heatwaves may become more frequent in the future
14:42 , Tom Place
Scientists have warned that climate change has led to more frequent and intense heatwaves, with Met Office projections indicating hot spells will become more frequent in the future, particularly in the south-east of the UK.
Professor Stephen Belcher, Met Office chief scientist, said: “Human-induced climate change has made events like this more likely and more intense. To see temperatures like this in the UK in June is sobering.
“Events like this bring home the implications of climate change, with very high temperatures and humidity bringing significant health implications from heat stress, as well as impacts to a range of sectors such as transport, energy and water supply.”
Temperature hits 34.2C at Heathrow

The Prime Minister said that the changing climate is "one of the most significant challenges of our time".
He added that it used to be "common ground" that climate change was a "generational challenge", but that it is a "shame that in order to chase Reform votes" the Conservatives have "changed their minds".
Sir Keir said: "I will always maintain that we must be global leaders on climate change and we always will be."
Over 1,000 schools to close in coming days
14:19 , Tom Place
At least 1,000 schools will be either closed or partially closed over the next two days as a rare red heat warning is in force for England and Wales.
With forecasters saying that temperatures could reach towards 40C on Thursday, hundreds of schools will either close completely, send children home early or make other adjustments such as relaxing uniform rules to help keep students and staff safe and comfortable.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has urged parents to send children to school if they remain open, warning “every day of absence and lesson missed has a cost”.
She said: “I know hot weather can be a struggle. But my message to families is simple: if your child’s school is open, you should keep sending them into school.”

Greenpeace calls for next PM to 'stay the course'
13:25 , Tom Place
Campaigners have called for the next Prime Minister to “stay the course” on climate policies, as MPs prepare to debate and vote on emissions targets for the period 2038-2042.
Greenpeace UK’s political campaigner Angharad Hopkinson said: “The summer of ’76 may be seared into the nation’s memory, but it’s quickly being overtaken by even more terrifying heatwaves.
“The only way off this hellish treadmill is to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
“Our next Prime Minister needs to act on the evidence outside their window and the advice of their scientific advisors and stay the course on climate policies.
“The alternative is parched reservoirs, unaffordable food, shuttered hospitals and schools and wildly fluctuating bills each time a new oil war is kindled.
“Every MP voting on carbon targets today, or lobbying for a watering down of net-zero policies, would do well to remember that.”

Rail services to be disrupted into Friday
12:04 , Tom Place
Significant disruption to train services from extreme heat will continue into Friday, an operator said.
Chiltern Railways has said it is extending the period when it is cancelling more than half its services, initially planned for Tuesday to Thursday.
Michael Stewart, commercial and customer strategy director at Chiltern Railways, said: “This week’s extreme weather is going to continue into Friday so as a result we strongly advise you to avoid travelling until the weekend.
“Trains are running at greatly reduced levels as there is a significant risk to infrastructure.
“Running a reduced service means there is more resilience in the network and more chance for the rail network to recover.
“Trains which do run may experience significant delays and see very busy conditions.”
Amber weather warning announced for Saturday
11:42 , Tom Place
The Met Office has issued an amber warning for extreme heat covering much of east and south-east England on Saturday.
Temperatures are expected to be a few degrees cooler than the previous days, but are still expected to exceed 30C, with peaks between 32C to 34C in London.

Red weather warnings are in place until 9pm on Thursday, and amber warnings had already been announced for Friday.
RAC 20% busier than normal during heatwave
11:15 , Tom Place
The RAC has said it responded to 20% more callouts to broken-down vehicles than usual on Tuesday during the heatwave
Spokesman Simon Williams said: “Tuesday was a very busy day for breakdowns with our patrols finishing the day 20% busier than normal for late June.
“Wednesday is looking even more challenging as more cars are succumbing to the extreme heat.
“We strongly urge people to avoid driving unless it’s essential, as breaking down in these conditions is potentially life threatening if they aren’t properly prepared.
“Being stuck at the side of a hot road without enough water and some form of shade is very serious.
“For this reason our patrols are also carrying extra bottles of water to give to broken-down members.”
Liberal Democrats calls for public buildings to be used as 'cool hubs'
10:30 , Tom Place
The Liberal Democrats have called for the Government to open air-conditioned public buildings as “cool hubs” for vulnerable people during the heatwave.
They party said that gyms, leisure centres, libraries and other buildings could offer relief for those particularly at risk from the extreme heat.
They have also urged ministers to prepare the country for more extreme temperatures by investing in cooling for hospitals, care homes and schools.
Liberal Democrat climate spokeswoman Pippa Heylings MP said: “Cool hubs could be a lifeline for the most vulnerable people in our communities who are struggling in the sweltering heat.
“Public spaces exist to serve their communities and it’s right they should offer refuge during heatwaves.
“Our hospitals, care homes and schools are dangerously hot, these buildings must be fit for a climate that is getting hotter every year.
“It is completely unfair to expect young people to cope with extreme heat as well as increased stress during crucial GCSE and A-level exam periods.”
What is causing the heatwave? Heat domes and Omega blocks explained
09:55 , Tom Place
The hot weather the capital is experiencing is being driven by a significant area of trapped high pressure building in Europe, known as a “heat dome”.
A heat dome is created when a persistent high-pressure system, known as an omega block, stays over the same area for days or potentially weeks, trapping very warm air underneath it.
The omega block takes its name from the shape of the Greek letter Ω, as it traps hot Saharan air like a lid on a pressure cooker.
It causes temperatures to become hotter and hotter, building through the day as warm air becomes compressed over a smaller region.
These weather systems and their prolonged heat increase the risk of wildfire and heat-related health problems, according to the Royal Meteorological Society (RMS).
What is a red weather warning?
09:16 , Tom Place
A red weather warning represents an exceptional spell of hot and humid weather expected across a region, with impacts to the general population highly likely.
It is expected that adverse health effects will be experienced, not just by those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to serious illness or danger to life .
There will also be a high risk of failure of heat-sensitive systems and equipment, with the loss of power and other essential services, such as water, electricity, gas or mobile phone services.
The Met Office has said that "substantial changes" in working practices and daily routines will be required.
This is only the second time a red warning has been issued since extreme heat warnings began in 2021.

Met office says UK could see 45C heatwave by 2056
08:21 , Tom Place
Met Office scientists have highlighted how events such as the infamous summer heatwave of 1976 could become significantly more intense in the future.
That summer remains one of the most significant weather events in UK history, with prolonged periods of heat and drought having a widespread impact on water resources, health and infrastructure.
The Met Office has developed a plausible “2056 scenario”, based on around 2.5°C of global warming, to show how a prolonged heat event similar to 1976 could evolve in the coming decades. - with UK temperatures reaching 45C.
This scenario is not a forecast of a specific future event, but a plausible illustration designed to help to understand how risks could change as the climate warms.
Met Office Chief Scientist Professor Stephen Belcher said: “Weather is the national conversation in the UK and the summer of 1976 lives on in many memories. Since then, our climate has fundamentally changed, with average UK summers having warmed by around 1.4°C. Crucially extremes have changed too.
"By using data from Met Office climate projections, we can glimpse into what an event like the 1976 summer would look like in the 2050s. It is a stark realisation to see the maximum temperatures reach 45°C.”

Mayor of London triggers 'high' air pollution alert for capital
Tuesday 23 June 2026 20:16 , Megan Howe
Sir Sadiq Khan has triggered a “high” air pollution alert for the capital London on Wednesday on advice from forecasters at Imperial College, the third one this year.
He urged Londoners to stop their engines idling and avoid burning garden waste, which can contribute to high levels of pollution, and said details have been shared with London’s GPs and emergency departments, to ensure that they have crucial information to help vulnerable patients.
Deputy mayor for environment and energy, Mete Coban said: “Toxic air is responsible for thousands of premature deaths in London each year, which is why the mayor has done everything in his power to tackle it, which includes launching the world’s largest clean air zone.
“We are urging Londoners to look after themselves during this period of extremely hot weather and elevated pollution levels, stop their engines idling, and refrain from burning garden waste – all of which contribute to high levels of pollution.
“It is really important we all do our bit to protect those who are most vulnerable as we continue working to build a safer and greener London for all.”

Met office says UK could see 45C heatwave by 2056
Tuesday 23 June 2026 13:05 , Niva Yadav
Met Office Chief Scientist Professor Stephen Belcher said:“Weather is the national conversation in the UK and the summer of 1976 lives on in many memories.

Why is the heatwave so challenging?
Tuesday 23 June 2026 12:45 , Niva Yadav
This week’s heatwave is set to feel particularly challenging, even more so than May’s record-breaking one.
This is because it is far more humid. The Met Office has said that the dew point - the measurement of how much moisture is in the air - could rise to 22C.
In layman’s terms, it is harder for our sweat to evaporate into the air and thereby, harder to cool off and shed heat.

Temperatures could reach 39C on Thursday
Tuesday 23 June 2026 12:17 , Niva Yadav
If you think today is hot, think again. Temperatures on Thursday could reach a maximum of 39C, most likely for somewhere in London or the South East.
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge, said: “The Met Office is flagging 39C as a headline maximum temperature on Thursday, most likely for somewhere in London or the South East.
“Forecast temperature values are indicative and are subject to a slight range either side.
“It is possible we could see temperatures higher than the 39C if the final values are at the upper end of our narrow range.
“It is important to remember that the temperature value is only one element of this extreme heatwave story.
“The other major factor is the high humidity which for many will make the intense heat even harder to endure.”

Are thunderstorms linked to heatwaves?
Tuesday 23 June 2026 10:44 , Niva Yadav
It should come as no surprise that the heatwave brought thunderstorms with it. The two are very much linked.
The extreme heat and humidity during the heatwave warms the Earth’s surface and the air above it. As this hot air mixes with the cool air, it creates an unstable atmosphere that triggers the thunderstorms.
Usually, thunderstorms mark the end of heatwaves as the rain and lightning break up the hot air. But brace yourself, as this heatwave is only just beginning.
