Greggs shuts London shops as capital bakes in 37C heatwave

Greggs has decided to shut stores in London due to the extreme heatwave.

As the temperature steadily climbed towards a forecast 37C in the capital on Wednesday, the bakery chain revealed it was closing 11 outlets in the UK for two days.

In an email to customers, Greggs said: “Just to let you know – the following shops will be temporarily closed on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th June to protect our customers and colleagues during the severe hot weather.”

The list includes two outlets in London - one in Barnet and another in Leicester Square.

The others on the list are Wantage, Aldridge, Wolverhampton, Luton, Trowbridge, Marlborough, Dudley and Northampton.

With temperatures tipped to reach 37C, scores of schools, shops and restaurants in London were closed as hundreds of thousands were given work-from-home days.

It comes as a red heat health warning is in place over London and other parts of the UK.

The alert came into effect at 9am on Wednesday and runs until midnight on Thursday.

In a message posted on social media, London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan urged people to take suitable precautions.

“Extreme heat poses a serious risk to health. Please prioritise safety: stay hydrated, avoid being out in the sun, and check on vulnerable neighbours.”
