For most fathers, the dream is to give their children a better future. For one family, that bond came full circle when an 18-year-old son stepped forward to save his father's life by donating one of his kidneys.
Ahead of Father's Day, the story of 49-year-old businessman Abid Raza and his son Ali has touched many hearts. What makes it even more remarkable is that doctors had to overcome a major medical hurdle to make the transplant possible.
Father's kidney failure led to a desperate search for a donor
Abid's life changed dramatically in March 2025 when he developed severe kidney-related complications.
According to TOI, he was diagnosed with rapidly progressive kidney failure caused by a rare autoimmune disorder, a condition in which the body's immune system attacks its own tissues and organs.
As his kidneys stopped functioning properly, dialysis became a regular part of his life.
"In March 2025, I developed kidney-related complications and my life changed completely. I had to undergo dialysis three times a week," Abid told TOI.
Doctors eventually concluded that a kidney transplant offered the best chance of long-term survival and a better quality of life.
Son Ali steps forward without hesitation
While the family searched for a suitable donor, Ali made a decision that would change both their lives.
Fresh from scoring 92 per cent in his Class XII examinations and preparing to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree, the teenager volunteered to donate one of his kidneys.
"There was no other option. My father's condition was worsening and I was the best match available in the family. There wasn't much to think about. I knew I had to do it," Ali told TOI.
His decision reflected not only love for his father but also a willingness to take on a major medical procedure at a young age.
Blood group mismatch created a major challenge
Just when the family thought they had found a solution, doctors discovered another problem.
Ali's blood group was B-positive, while Abid's was O-positive. Under normal circumstances, such a mismatch can make a kidney transplant extremely difficult because the recipient's immune system may reject the donated organ.
This meant the transplant could not proceed through conventional methods.
What is an ABO-incompatible kidney transplant?
Doctors at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj, decided to perform an ABO-incompatible kidney transplant.
This advanced procedure allows transplants between donors and recipients with different blood groups.
Before surgery, doctors carry out a process called desensitisation, which reduces the antibodies that could attack the donor kidney. The treatment may involve plasmapheresis, a procedure that filters harmful antibodies from the blood, along with specialised medicines that suppress immune responses.
According to TOI, Dr Ravi Kumar Singh, Senior Consultant of Nephrology, said, "ABO-incompatible transplantation is one of the major advances in transplant medicine that allows us to offer hope to patients who may otherwise struggle to find a suitable donor."
Doctors praise teenager's courage
The medical team said the case stood out not only because of its complexity but also because of the young donor's determination.
According to TOI, Dr Paresh Jain, Senior Director of Urology and Kidney Transplant Surgery, said, "Organ donation is a profound act of generosity, and Ali's decision reflected remarkable courage and maturity."
The doctors successfully completed the transplant despite the blood-group incompatibility.
Successful transplant gives father a second chance
The operation proved successful, bringing relief to the family. Doctors reported that the transplanted kidney began functioning immediately after surgery, a positive sign known as good graft function.
Ali recovered quickly and was discharged four days after the donor surgery. Abid was able to return home within a week.
For a family that had spent months worrying about an uncertain future, the successful transplant marked the beginning of a new chapter.
