Former Sunrise host and meerkat whisperer David ‘Kochie’ Koch has slammed the Logie Awards after it was announced on Monday that Today presenters Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo had been nominated over Channel 7’s Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington.
The TV star, whose stint on Sunrise from 2002 to 2023 makes him the longest-serving breakfast television host in Australian history, shared a savage Instagram post on Monday evening questioning how the current Sunrise hosts were snubbed in the Ray Martin Award for Most Popular News or Public Affairs Presenter category when they consistently outperform Channel 9’s breakfast show in the ratings.
“So let me get this straight @tvweeklogiesawards @tvweekmag Most Popular News or Public Affairs Presenter nominees for this year’s Logies contains both @today.show hosts but neither @sunriseon7 hosts,” he wrote, incorrectly tagging Today’s Instagram account in what I’m deciding was a hilariously petty move.
He then came prepared with the receipts, proof, timeline and screenshots, pointing out that Sunrise has won the ratings “every single day this year” and is averaging 424,000 daily viewers, compared to Today’s audience of 308,000.
“This has been going on for years,” he continued. “If you ever complain you’re seen as a bad sport. But now I’m out of it I can say @tvweeklogiesawards @tvweekmag honestly WTF?”
Today responds to Kochie’s post
Although Karl and Sarah themselves are yet to respond to Kochie’s savage post, a Channel 9 spokesperson shared a statement to PEDESTRIAN.TV on Tuesday morning, saying: “We’re incredibly proud of the Today team and grateful for the recognition. Congratulations to all nominees.”
Karl and Sarah are nominated alongside former Today host Allison Langdon, who currently hosts A Current Affair, as well as Channel 7 journalist Michael Usher and ABC presenters David Speers and Sarah Ferguson.
Karl previously won both the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality and Silver Logie for Most Popular Presenter in 2011. Meanwhile, Kochie was nominated for Most Popular Presenter for four consecutive years from 2004 to 2007, but has never won.
Nat Barr has also never received a single nomination for her work on Sunrise, despite working on the breakfast show for more than two decades.
Fans rally behind Kochie
Kochie’s Instagram post has since been flooded with supportive comments, including one from Sunrise’s roving reporter Katie Brown, who said the nominations snub was “actually ridiculous”.
“How Nat and Shirvo don’t get a nomination I’m shook,” she wrote.
“Good on you for calling this out Kochie. Seems very odd,” one fan replied, with another writing, “Was thinking exactly the same when I saw the noms”.
Former ABC News Breakfast presenter Michael Rowland also commented with a laughing emoji and wrote: “…and won’t anybody think of News Breakfast?!”
Meanwhile, others pointed out that the award has nothing to do with the ratings and is instead for the most popular presenter — although you could argue that higher ratings equal more popularity.
The winner is set to be announced at the 2026 Logie Awards on Sunday, August 16, which will, rather ironically, be broadcast live on Channel 7 and 7plus.
P.TV has contacted the Logie Awards and Channel 7 for comment.
