Former Rangers loanee Aaron Ramsey has been appointed head coach of League One side Oxford United, landing his first permanent role in management.
The 35-year-old, who lifted the Scottish Cup during his short spell at Ibrox, replaces Matt Bloomfield following Oxford’s relegation from the Championship.
Ramsey, capped 86 times by Wales, moves into the job after building coaching experience with his national side and a stint in interim charge at boyhood club Cardiff City. Speaking to Oxford’s official website, the former Ibrox midfielder outlined his ambition to make an immediate impact.
“It’s an honour and privilege to be appointed head coach of Oxford,” he said. “From my discussions with the club, I can sense the ambition and desire for success, which gives me great excitement about this opportunity.
“This is a moment I have been preparing for over many years. I’ve played under some of the best managers in the game and experienced high-pressure environments throughout my career.

“I want to use what I’ve learnt to bring a culture of high standards, professionalism and work ethic to this talented group of players.”
Ramsey, who enjoyed a decorated playing career with Arsenal and Juventus as well as his silverware success at Rangers, is now targeting progress from the dugout.
“My teams will play with a clear identity, be built on elite habits, with a commitment to improving every day,” he added. “I want a squad that fights for the badge until the end, and one that makes our supporters proud.
“I understand the responsibility that comes with this role, and can’t wait to get started, meet the players, and connect with our supporters as we strive to bring success.”
Oxford have confirmed Ramsey’s coaching staff will be announced in due course as the former Rangers man begins his next chapter in management.
