An Aussie influencer has gone viral after she and her family were “rejected” from a local pool in France after a swimwear mishap.
In an Instagram reel that has more than 3.3 million views, lifestyle and beauty influencer Lauren Lakin shared that she and her family were refused entry into a pool in France due to her husband and son’s board shorts.
“We just got rejected by the local pool,” she began in the viral video.
“There’s a pool that is right near our Airbnb. We went to go in, and they wouldn’t allow Kit to wear the [board shorts].”
Her husband then joked that his shorts weren’t “revealing enough” and that swimwear in France must be “hugging the genitalia”.
“You have to wear Euro shorts or Speedos, so they must be boxer briefs. They must be skin-tight and hugging the genitalia to enter the pool,” he joked.
“These are too conservative, apparently,” he continued before Lauren warned Aussie travellers about what to pack ahead of their Euro summer trips.
“I don’t know about being too conservative, but that’s the rule. So, just be warned, maybe pack some of those,” she said.
“They had a vending machine there where you could buy them, but Houston, also in his little board shorts, couldn’t get in with the boys. The girls you could wear whatever, but the boys you had to wear the— like Speedos.”
Furthermore, in the caption, Lauren acknowledged that the dress code was both a hygiene rule and “French tradition”.
“It’s also been the French tradition for hundreds of years, so I can respect that!” she wrote.
“Totally going to get Kit some Euro shorts this week before we attempt the pool again.”
Why are board shorts not allowed in French pools?
Like most viral videos, Lauren copped an influx of comments, speculating why they were rejected from the pool. However, most viewers noted that the issue wasn’t anything about a “conservative” dress code, but rather hygiene.
“It’s for cleanliness, they consider that if you’re wearing them on the street, they won’t be clean for the pool,” one person commented.
“It’s nothing to do with moral/conservative dress code, it’s a hygiene thing, so guys don’t get in the pool in shorts they’ve been wearing outside. Very sensible, and they sell the trunks at every pool I’ve been to. I was excited. Got to see my boyfriend in skimpies,” an excited viewer shared.
“Our French friends said it was a hygiene thing coz blokes would wear underpants under their board shorts and they don’t like this,” a third wrote.
A quick Google search also supports this notion, with multiple websites giving foreigners a heads up on what swimwear is appropriate in France.
As the famous saying goes: I see London, I see France, you’d better swim in underpants… actually, budgie smugglers, or however the saying goes.
