An Alabama man faces a murder charge after allegedly shooting and killing his cousin following an argument over a Facebook post.
Robert Keith Barlow, 55, was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen at a home in Foley, about 35 miles southeast of Mobile, Monday evening, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said.
Authorities detained the victim’s cousin, 42-year-old Joseph Lee Smith, at the scene. He was later charged with murder in Barlow’s death.
“Some words were exchanged; eventually a firearm was introduced, and Mr. Barlow sacrificed his life,” Captain Justin Correa told WKRG.
Witnesses told investigators that the cousins were fighting over a Facebook post. Authorities did not share any further details about the post or the fight.
“Words can hurt sometimes, but producing a firearm and shooting somebody over words is never worth it. This never ends well for either party,” Correa said. “Now you have family that has lost a loved one and another family member is going to be in jail for murder.”
Investigators said that the argument escalated quickly and no alcohol was involved in the dispute.
Deputies found Barlow suffering from a gunshot wound on the front lawn of his cousin’s home. The officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived. Barlow was taken to Baldwin Health Medical Facility in Foley, where he later died from his injuries, the sheriff’s office said.
Smith was taken to Baldwin County Corrections Center, where he remains in custody. The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active.
